NBA: Championship parade in Dallas shows value of loyalty

As hundreds of thousands of Dallas Mavericks fans lined the streets to celebrate their heroes, it was clear that the party was all the sweeter because of the loyalty and service of Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry over the years. Through the good times and bad, they had stayed true to Dallas.

Sure, there would have been a parade regardless, but the character of Nowitzki and Terry counts for a lot. They didn't jump; they didn't seek a move elsewhere. Mavericks fans wept for their players in 2006 but five years later, those ghosts have been buried. As floats piled through the streets of Dallas, the players soaked up the frenzied atmosphere before a special rally at the American Airlines Center. It was a chance for the fans to say a big thank you for the way their players have bought into the city.

As opposed to Miami's hastily-arranged group that sought to shortcut the system, the Mavericks captured the hearts of not only their own fans but basketball fans all around the world who embraced the fact that Nowitzki - and Terry - had stuck by Dallas, absorbed the pain and suffering and bounced back to go all the way. For NBA purists, that is the way to win a championship.
