Football: Free transfer frenzy ahead

While the Premier League elite look set to splash out during the summer transfer window, there is also plenty of quality available for rock bottom prices. In fact, the surprising number of free agents has provided an intriguing subplot for the weeks ahead, particularly for those clubs who are priced out of the big money bidding.

There has been an exodus at relegated clubs West Ham and Birmingham, making the likes of Matthew Upson, Sebastian Larsson and James McFadden available on a free transfer.

Then there are even bigger names like Patrick Vieira and Jonathan Woodgate, released by Manchester City and Tottenham respectively. For newly promoted clubs and those expected to be in the bottom half of the table, this is clearly good news.
