The first ever Test match at Hampshire's Rose Bowl suffered a rain-hit start. Only 13 overs were bowled in the morning session, with Sri Lanka reaching 23-1 after England won the toss and chose to field.
On the positive side, an inspection was scheduled for 3.15pm. Kumar Sangakkara, reluctantly captaining the side in the absence of Tillakaratne Dilshan, is at the crease and has a huge role to play if the Sri Lankans are to reach a competitive first innings total.
For England, Stuart Broad was wayward with the new ball but Jimmy Anderson, returning to the side after injury, was back among the wickets.
UPDATE: Day 1 got worse for Sri Lanka with the loss of Sangakkara for just two, playing loosely outside off stump as the tourists slipped to 29-3.
